WREN

Ajax had led them inside the ship, past thick metal doors, and into a special room reserved for priceless artifacts. Gold and silver trim adorned the showroom’s exquisite French décor. Larger than life paintings of bishops and popes clung to the wall.

A piece of granite stone rested inside in a glass exhibit, an overhead light casting a halo around the top. A sharp cut had been made in the center, like a chisel mark, and this section appeared to belong to a much larger artifact. Carved into the polished surface, the unusual hieroglyphs and cuneiform script was unlike anything Alabama had ever seen.

As Alabama peered closer, the glint caught tiny vertical etchings almost invisible to the naked eye. The stone showed no signs of wear. She marveled at its condition. “Where is it from?”

The Emissary closed the cherry-colored door behind her. “An ancient city called Ugarit.”

Alabama remembered Dr. Singh’s pamphlet called “The Three Sages of Ugarit” inside his house. Ugarit. And she had not had time to read the pamphlet.

“The ruins of Ugarit, sometimes called Ras Shamra, lie in northern Syria. It’s a fascinating place. Parts of a wall exist dating back to 6000 BC.”

B.C. rather than B.C.E. So, she believes in God.

An antique globe sat next to an enclosed bookshelf featuring textbooks and binders. Amongst the lot, books on Christianity, The Hittite Empire, Egyptian history, ancient religions, and genetics stood out. A thirty-foot circular rug added a dash of color. In the center, a blossoming lotus burst forth, the hues dulled as to not stand out. Ornate wooden cabinets, carved with angels and the Virgin Mary, sat next to reading chairs.

“And you found this stone in Ugarit?” Jackson asked.

“No, but that’s where we traced it from, but indeed, in the old ruins of Ugarit, we found much more. Or, I should say, what used to be Ugarit…” the Emissary said, her voice drifting off.

Dubois, the man she loved but would never trust, existed underneath Jackson’s skin. Or was it Dubois? The more time went on, the more the two men seemed to co-exist as one, neither personality rising to the forefront. She couldn’t be certain Jackson wasn’t acting like Dubois to fish more information from her. The kiss still lingered on her lips like electricity.

He had kissed her. Only Dubois would do that. The more she thought about it, the more she knew after they’d kissed, nothing would be the same.

Alabama took a step back from the stone tablet. “What happened to Ugarit?”

“The Sea People killed them.”

From what Alabama understood, the Sea People comprised a confederation of ship-faring civilizations from Western Asia Minor, Southern Europe, the Mediterranean islands, and the Aegean. Toward the end of the Bronze Age, they invaded Egypt, Phoenicia, Cyprus, Anatolia, and Syria by sailing around the eastern Mediterranean Ocean at the end of the Bronze Age.

“What is this stone?” Jackson asked.

The Emissary almost smiled. She inched up to the glass and bent down, so that she was level with the artifact. “This was found by one of our teams in the ruins.
